17 ASC Log no. 416 A member of the public reported seeing what they believed to be a dead goat on the cliffs in Burrington Combe at 09:50. The CRO informed some local cave leaders who were in the area at the time and the animal was safely removed.

16 ASC Log No. 1097.  Avon & Somerset Constabulary contacted the CRO at 20:12hrs concerning a vulnerable missing female in Cheddar Gorge. Avon & Somerset Search and Rescue was called out at 20:20hrs, along with Mendip Cave Rescue who attended and South West Ambulance. The missing female was found after 2hrs of search. The injured female was treated by the rescue teams doctor and paramedic for her injuries. The casualty was moved to a safe location at the top of Cheddar Gorge where she was winched to an RAF Search and Rescue Helicopter at 00:30hrs on 15/08/12 for immediate transfer to Bristol Frenchay Hospital. The team was stood down at 02:00.

15 ASC Log No. 808. A&SSAR was called out at 15:44 to Cheddar Gorge where an 11 year old boy had fallen. With assistance from SWAST and Avon Fire and Rescue Service the injured boy was airlifted to Frenchay Hospital by coastguard helicopter. Avon and Somerset Constabulary beat manager for Cheddar was in attendance with other local officers to oversee the temporary road closure to ensure public safety and as overall incident commander. The boy’s mother was helped down to the roadside and taken by road ambulance. A&SSAR was stood down at 18:08

14 ASC Log No. 915 Avon & Somerset Police contacted the CRO at 18:10 notifying them of a missing 14 year old boy in the River Avon at Saltford Weir. The team was called out at 18.22 for a water and bankside search. Two Swift Water Rescue technicians (rescue swimmers) were deployed into the weir along with a bankside search team and a rescue boat on the river from AFRS. The incident involved a large multi-agency operation involving Great Western Ambulance Service, HART, HEMS, Avon Fire and Rescue Service, Q99 police helicopter, and the Underwater Search Unit from AS Police. A&SSAR was stood down at 23:44. A body was discovered by the Underwater Search Unit at 23.30. It was formally identified on scene.

13 ASC Log No. 854. The A&S police control room called the CRO at 09.27 alerting the SAR team of a vulnerable male, who had been reported missing the day before in the Weston-super-Mare area. The team was called out and assigned the Worlebury Woods area to search. This included three large quarries – the technical team was deployed to search in them. A thorough search of the woods was completed and the male was found, safe and well by police in a different location. The team was stood down at 15:30 hrs.

12 ASC Log No 605. The Technical team CRO was contacted at 13:30 by SWAST ambulance control. The report was of a female who had fallen about 30ft. The team was to RV outside Gough’s Cave in Cheddar Gorge. The FIM was contacted and a police log number was obtained. The team discovered the patient was actually inside Gough’s Cave and was reported to have lower limb injuries. The Mendip cave rescue team was requested and HART was dispatched from Exeter.

The Technical rescue team gained access to the patient, and together with a paramedic crew and help from members of the cave rescue team the female was recovered to the ambulance on the road at the entrance to the cave. The team was stood down at 15:12.

11 ASC Log No 979. The Chief Rescue Officer was contacted by ASC Force Incident Manager at 23:48 on 31/05/12 concerning a missing person incident at East Huntspill. ASSARs Bankside and Swift Water Rescue Technicians (SRT) were called out at 00:13. The north bank of the River Brue that passed a caravan park were searched and two SRTs searched the river by boat. The team was stood down at 05:44.

10 ASC Log No 327. Avon & Somerset Police Force Incident Manager contacted the CRO at 12:55 on 24/5/12 concerning a missing man in the Bath area after his vehicle had been located. The man had been missing for several days and had known medical conditions. The team was put on standby at 13:00 after consultations with the duty “Polsa”. A&SSAR’s search and rescue teams were then called out at 16:30. Woodlands, fields and bankside areas were searched extensively well into the evening until the search was eventually suspended overnight. The search resumed on 25/5/12 with an A&SSAR swiftwater rescue boat team searching the River Avon upstream of Bathampton Mill, followed by further A&SSAR search and rescue teams searching further different woodland areas. Assistance with the search was also obtained from Mendip Cave Rescue Organisation searching the disused underground stone mine workings in the area. The teams of A&SSAR and MCRO were stood down at 21:45 that evening.

09 ASC Log 1077. The CRO was contacted by the FIM at 21:42 requesting assistance on the Clifton Suspension bridge, with a despondent male. The ambulance EOC also contacted the CRO and the technical rescue team was called out. The incident was in the Avon Gorge just behind the observatory. The tech team assisted the police negotiator, and the male was brought back to safety. Also in attendance were paramedics from GWAS, the HEMS response teams and the Avon Fire and Rescue Service. The team was stood down at 22:31.

08 ASC FIM.  The CRO was alerted to exceptionally heavy rain and thunder storms that were happening in the Cheddar area of the Mendips. This had resulted in reports of very heavy surface water ‘run off’ in certain areas. Although no specific incidents of flooding were reported, the Water Rescue Team (including SRT technicians) were put on a high level of preparedness to respond at 14:40.

07 ASC FIM. The Force Incident Manager alerted the CRO (at 11:40) to a vulnerable person, who was threatening to self harm on a tall building in Taunton. The incident was resolved before it became necessary to mobilise the technical rescue team.

06 ASC Log No 1271(06/05/12). The FIM contacted the CRO at 11:32 to report a 79 year old female was missing in the Crewkerne area of Somerset. The female was very vulnerable and had been missing over night. The CRO was put in touch by phone with the local police sergeant and PolSA. A search plan was devised and local police committed local resource to the search plan. The A&S SAR search team was put on standby. The casualty was located at 13:05, and the team was stood down.

05 ASC Log No 527-D. An A&SSAR member was flagged down by a trainee nurse and assisted at the scene of a single vech road traffic incident at Filton S.Glos. A male rider had fallen from his motorcycle at speed and sustained multiple injuries, he was lapsing in and out of consciousness. The males airway was at times becoming compromised. Basic life support was given and his airway maintained together with spinal stabilisation to help prevent further injury until GWAS attended. Assistance was also given to the GWAS crews with extraction and loading of the casualty whilst attending officers from ASC maintained traffic control and safety at the accident scene on this busy main road and the incident investigation works.

04 ASC Log 351. Ambulance inc No 0263. Cleeve Road, Goblin Combe. A member of the SAR team chanced upon a female who was out walking her dog, at 08.57 hrs, who had fallen and sustained lower leg injuries. The ambulance and police control rooms were informed, and members of the SAR team carried the patient a short distance to the road where an ambulance was waiting. The SAR team were on a recruitment weekend at Goblin Combe Centre, a very short distance away from the incident. The team was stood down at 09:50 hrs.

03 ASC Log No.602. The Technical rescue team were training in Cheddar Gorge and noticed a paramedic go past at high speed. The police followed – saying there had been a motorcycle accident at ‘Bowery Corner’ near Harptree Lodge at the top of the Gorge. A small number of team members deployed to assist if required. No assistance was required at the scene, so the team stood down.

02 ASC Log No. 896 Due to the widespread extreme weather, including ice, snow and freezing rain, the police control placed an ‘open log’ with the team, enabling a series of responses to be made in support of the police service. This included emergency response and 4×4 logistical support. The main areas of response were, Wells, Chilcompton, Radstock, Peasdown St John, Radford and Bath. A response vehicle was available in Cheddar. As the weather improved during the night, the team was stood down at midnight.

01 ASG Log No. 775 At 16:45 the CRO was contacted by the police control room, requesting an immediate response to the Wells area of ‘F’ division. A family was reported to be trapped in a car, and due to the extreme cold and snowy weather the police were unable to access the location. A response was made in the team 4×4 ambulance, and the family of four was successfully recovered to a place of safety.

23 ASC Log No 0011 The police control called the CRO at 02:10, alerting the team to a very high risk, female who was know to be in Goblin Combe. The team was called and an RV set up at Goblin Combe. The initial search plan was successful and the female was located by police dogs near Brockley Combe. The incident was stood down at 03:35.

22 ASC Log No. 540 The CRO was contacted by police informing of a 78 year old male who was missing from home in the Keynsham area. The man had been missing since 13:00 and the team was called at 19:26. As soon as the team was called the man was located – safely, well out of the area by a member of the public. The team was stood down at 19:30.

21 ASC Log No. 527 The CRO was contacted by police informing that a very young male with learning difficulties was reported missing in the woods at Goblin Combe. The team was called out at 14:32. The male was located soon afterwards and the team was stood down.
